about

This track is all about Flint, Michigan and the ongoing water crisis. Flint neighbors the town I grew up in, and it is still dealing with the fallout from the government inadvertently poisoning the water supply and then deliberately covering it up. Sadly, this is a city almost everyone chose to ignore for decades before the crisis. This song sums up my thoughts on the irony and hypocrisy of people pretending to care about a city poisoned by lead, when no one cared about lead in the form of bullets poisoning the community for decades.

lyrics

Raise a Glass

There's poison in the water and the irony is priceless
We've been tasting it for years with the sins and the vices
But no one really cared to want to find an antidote
Cause everybody knows that the poison's in the dose

Feeling a little thirsty, want to turn on the tap?
The water looks a little black, ha, imagine that
It's habitat by Hazmat, but nobody gets the gown and cap
The filtered flask, the gas mask, so I'll delegate the next task
We took a trip to where you won't
Some say do but most say don't
For years there's been toxicity with very little publicity
No one cared about our plight
And lead was flying through the night
But then somehow some got in the water
Now you pretend to care about the city's sons and daughters
It's a crime without a criminal, don't blame me I won't blame you
Kinda reminds me when I was a kid and used to play Clue
Ok, we got a mystery, but I think I found the culprit
It's the Governor with the lead pipe in the office
Hey, I solved it
The politicians flock and say don't worry now we're here
You look at 'em like where you been the last fifty years?
It's ok, don't worry, we see you got a problem
Gonna get to the bottom, yep we cause 'em then we solve 'em
And we're gonna leave now, but you really made us think
No, come on, please stay, let me buy you a drink

Raise a glass to disease
Raise a glass to the health
Raise a glass to the means
Raise a glass to the wealth
Raise a glass
We took a trip to where you won't
Raise a glass, here's a toast
Compliments to the host

The poison's in the dose

There's poison in the water and the irony is priceless
We've been tasting it for years with the sins and the vices
But no one really cared to want to find an antidote
Cause everybody knows that the poison's in the dose

Ok, come on now, class is in session
You there in the back, it's time for the lesson
We're gonna talk civics and how to add and subtract
I don't think you'll need a calculator for this math
See if you're living in the city and you give a dose of lead
But instead of in the water you put one through the head
It's a guaranteed life sentence, no parole, no bail
Straight to the prison when you leave the county jail
See on the outside this was ok, it was just the situation
And everyone was provided with the route of administration
But here's the good part where you want to pay attention
You can poison everyone and get away without suspicion
Just throw your hands in the air, pretend to be disheveled
And label it a failure of government on all levels
You prosecute a few just to placate the rest
It's like standing in front of a firing squad with a bulletproof vest
And still the water's flowing and it's so good to see
Cause it's flavored with the failure and the hypocrisy
So I'd like to make a toast, raise 'em up if you got it
And let's thank 'em all for such a lovely product

Raise a glass to disease
Raise a glass to the health
Raise a glass to the means
Raise a glass to the wealth
Raise a glass
We took a trip to where you won't
Raise a glass, here's a toast
Compliments to the host
